Metal Identity

Metal Music is a genre of music that I enjoy the most, it's also interesting to look at the different identities that the genre creates with each sub-genre it creates. Sub-genres of metal that have very distinct visual and musical attributes are what create the different identities within the metal communitiy.

For instance this video is by Canadian band Despised Icon for the song "Furtive Monologue" is an example of what the current Death-Core identity is like

This next clip is what people consider to be Viking Metal by the band Amon Amarth for the song "Pursuit of Vikings". Notice that both cultures look and sound completely different but are both labeled with a Metal identity.

Most people outside of the Metal community do not see a very big difference between the two bands, but to someone that exists on either spectrum of Death-Core or Viking Metal, or even within both, can tell the difference between the two. The metal community offers completely different experiences with the every sub-genre of metal it creates. That poses the question, what’s happening to the metal identity? How does the invention of all these sub genres change the metal identity? And how does that change the metal community as a whole? Does this metal community fit nicely amongst other music communities?
